Framable, archival giclée print of a photo taken by Morbid Anatomy founder Joanna Ebenstein, and featured in the book The Anatomical Venus. This is the "Venerina" or “Little Venus” an Anatomical Venus crafted by the workshop of Clemente Susini, 1782, on view at the Palazzo Poggi in Bologna, Italy.
This wonderful, life sized was woman is described on the museum website: "The agony of a young woman is represented in her last instant of life as she abandons herself to death voluptuously and completely naked. The thorax and abdomen can be opened, allowing the various parts to be disassembled so as to simulate the act of anatomic dissection."
Joanna Ebenstein is a Brooklyn-based writer, curator, photographer and graphic designer. She is the creator of the Morbid Anatomy blog, library and event series, and was cofounder and creative director of the recently shuttered Morbid Anatomy Museum in Brooklyn. Her books include Death: A Graveside Companion and The Anatomical Venus. Her work explores the intersections of art and medicine, death and culture, and the objective and subjective.
