The Angelical language received through the spiritual operations of English magus and court astrologer Dr John Dee and his seers in the latter part of the sixteenth century is said to be truly Adamical: the angel Ilemese described this sacred speech as ‘a language taught in Paradise… by infusion, to Adam’. It is said to be the tongue spoken in the Garden by the First Man and First Woman. It may be approached therefore as an internationally sacred form of ancestral ritual speech, surpassing the very national borders and imperial boundaries its early modern receivers sought to impose on the world in their colonial expansions.
The so-called Enochian language is conceived of as a – indeed the – natural language: the most accurate and incorruptible tongue of Eden. The archangel Gabriel explained to Dr Dee that Adam not only named the flora and fauna of Eden in the Angelical speech, but conversed with and swore with them in this sacred language. It can therefore be approached as an ancestral language, not merely in the sense of being a common treasury of all humanity, but of the whole living world and all its denizens great and small.
In this class, contemporary cunning-man and historian of magic Dr Alexander Cummins will lead us through an examination of the Enochian revelations received by Dr Dee, and celebrate some of the ways Dee and Enochian magicians since have explored the ritual uses of its sacred language of Adam and the angels. Moreover, we will consider how enterprising magical practitioners today may wish to experiment with its magical potencies and poetic virtues in their own conjurations, spirit-work, and spell-craft.
