The “personal myth” is a nebulous concept that rests at the intersection of the impulse to create and the myths we are living. Swiss psychoanalyst C.G. Jung has written that the creation and determination of a personal myth is the goal of the work of becoming more fully ourselves. And this myth must come, as noted by Jungian analyst Marie Louise Von Franz, from your own suffering and struggling “with a question until an answer has come to you from the depths of your soul.”

Jung called the creation, exploration and expression of one’s personal myth the work of a lifetime. The discovery of a personal myth includes creative acts, exploring mythology that speaks to our souls, and integration of the pieces of ourselves that we have rejected or denied – the personal Shadow.

This class aims to move you towards the realization of your own personal myth, and will provide provide tools, exercises, resources, and starting places for the work of living. Using Jung’s own artistic exploration of his myth, The Red Book as a guide, we will circumambulate these questions, inviting our deepest selves to express their truths.

Integrating homework, personal exploration, projects, rituals, meditations, and journal prompts, this is an intensive course that creates a container for asking the big questions in life, such as what happens when we die? What is the meaning of life? What is my purpose?  What is my vocation or calling? What parts of myself have I rejected or denied?

Over the course of eight weeks, instructor Alicia King Anderson, Ph.D. will guide participants through exercises and ongoing explorations to begin their journeys of personal mythopoesis. Students will leave with tools, prompts and tactics that they can return to, as well as a symbolic roadmap for their own personal myth's discovery, contemplation, and rediscovery for years to come. An extensive optional further reading list will also be included in the syllabus.

Alicia King Anderson, Ph.D. is an instructor, author, and coach dedicated to helping people discover the healing power of storytelling and creativity. She uses tools to tap into the power of the unconscious, and the power of myth and fairy tale to help students tell deep emotional truths.
