This three-session online course will explore the strange and influential world of Kenneth Grant, magician, novelist, student of Aleister Crowley and founder of the Typhonian Tradition. Grant took Crowley’s Thelema into increasingly strange territory, blending ritual magic, Tantra, dreams, surrealism, extraterrestrial intelligence and the occult imagination.
At the heart of this exploration is H. P. Lovecraft, the great American writer of cosmic horror. Grant recognised in Lovecraft’s fiction a mythology remarkably close to his own magical explorations: ancient powers emerging from beyond human reality, alien intelligences, forbidden knowledge and gateways into other dimensions of consciousness. We’ll explore Lovecraft as the crucial American connection in the Typhonian imagination, and consider how his fictional mythos became entangled with twentieth-century occultism.
Across three immersive sessions, we’ll explore Grant’s relationship with Crowley and the evolution of Thelema into the Typhonian Current; the role of Left-Hand Path Tantra, sexual gnosis and the Nightside of consciousness; and the strange territory where occult practice meets weird fiction and cosmic horror.
We’ll also consider Grant’s fascination with extraterrestrial entities, dream transmission and non-human intelligences, alongside the visionary futurism of Soror Nema and the Maat Current. What might an evolving magical aeon look like? How does occultism change when human beings are imagined as part of a much larger, stranger cosmos? This course approaches the Typhonian Current as a living imaginative experiment: an attempt to create new mythologies for a technological, psychedelic and increasingly post-human age.
Suitable for occultists, magicians, lovers of weird fiction and anyone fascinated by the meeting of magic, mythology and modern horror writing.
Julian Vayne is a British occultist, author and teacher with over 40 years’ experience of Western magic. His longstanding engagement with Aleister Crowley and Kenneth Grant informs a deep interest in Left-Hand Path magic, Tantra, the Nightside and the visionary dimensions of occult practice.
