Our history has largely been written by men to valorize their own activities, yet much of it is false—as when women’s contributions are attributed to men—or misleading, as when only a narrow range of human experience is recorded. Evolutionary diagrams often depict a male figure progressing from ape to upright man, weapon in hand. Yet as scientists and archaeologists look more closely at the historical record, it becomes clear that neither our symbolic nor written histories fully reflect reality. More intriguingly, what if we were to measure human strength by what the female body does best: resisting disease, sustaining endurance, living longer, adapting both physically and emotionally, and enduring pain? While men’s and women’s bodies evolved with different strengths and limitations, it is the cultural framing of the male body as normative—and the female body as deviant—that has most disadvantaged women.
This class offers an alternative reading of our past, restoring women to a place of equal value and prominence in shaping the human story. We will explore how prehistoric women, through gathering and hunting, became early scientists, artists, and healers; how patriarchal systems disrupted this life-centered worldview; and how these shifts continue to impact women’s health and the world today. We will also consider how our perspective changes when both humanity and divinity are understood through the female body, rather than the male. What might change if women were recognized as complete and equal human beings?
Whether you seek to honor women in every phase of life or to explore the power and relevance of the Female Divine, expanding your historico-spiritual perspective can help you more clearly discern truth and more fully embrace the great Circle of Life.
Whether you are interested in honoring women’s lives or exploring the Female Divine, this course expands our historico-spiritual perspective and invites a reorientation of how we understand both the past and ourselves. By recovering what has been obscured—and in doing so reclaiming women’s authority, agency, and central place in the human story—we open the possibility of a more balanced and life-affirming world.
Dr. Blythe “Collie” Collier has nonetheless both scribed and deciphered cryptic writings -- some of which you can read at her website (www.ColliesBestiary.com). She has also discovered the resting places of ancient texts, due to being the founder and principal of the upcoming educational nonprofit Nisaba Editing & Press, which assists Women's Spirituality scholars in editing and publishing their theses and dissertations for a lay audience, so these treasures are never lost. She has trained and traveled with humans, horses, dogs, cats, snakes, camels, and elephants, and cannot resist proudly mentioning her beautiful and clever rescue dog, Goldie -- an Expert level Trick Dog! Dr. Collie has also studied, created, and initiated mystical rites, and is a content creator at "Sharing Women's Spirituality - with Laughing Collie!" (www.youtube.com/@laughingcollie). Finally, she has both crafted and recovered long-lost artifacts, so that appreciation and care of the beautiful and sacred shall never die.
