Trace the relationship between haunting, nostalgia, and the eerie through literature, folklore, and visual culture—and build your own Archive of Haunting through guided creative practice.
This three-hour interactive workshop explores the relationship between the eerie, haunting, nostalgia, and memory through literature, folklore, visual culture, and creative practice. Drawing on the work of Carmen Maria Machado, Angela Carter, Helen Oyeyemi, and selected folktales, participants will examine how writers evoke emotional and psychological unease through absence, repetition, and longing. Through close reading, discussion, image-based exploration, and a series of guided creative exercises, we'll translate these literary and theoretical ideas into practical methods for making the familiar feel strange.
Throughout the workshop, participants will build a personal Archive of Haunting—a collection of maps, memories, images, observations, and writing that traces the people, places, objects, and stories that continue to linger in their lives. This evolving archive will serve as both a creative artifact and a springboard for new work, offering multiple points of entry for writers, artists, and the simply curious.
Designed for participants of all experience levels, the workshop emphasizes curiosity, experimentation, and close observation. Whether beginning a new project or deepening an existing one, participants will leave with fresh creative material, practical craft techniques for creating atmosphere, emotional resonance, and narrative tension, as well as new ways of thinking about how stories shape our perception of the world.
Atina Hartunian is a writer, independent scholar, and educator. A first-generation Armenian American, she earned her MFA in Creative Writing from Pacific University in 2023. Her honors include a Teaching Fellowship from Anaphora Arts (2024), a Pacific University MFA Merit Scholarship (2021), and residencies with the Cambridge Writers’ Workshop, Rockvale Writers’ Colony (2025), and most recently the Carolyn Moore Writing Residency (2026).
She is currently developing constraint-based prompts for generative writing sessions and a five-part Horror Lecture Series, which she has presented at the ThunderDome Conference, The Writer’s Center, and CALYX Press. Her chapbook Love at First Sip was recently shortlisted for the C&R Press Summer Tide Pool Chapbook Awards (2025) and her flash pieceI'd Rather Lose My Tits Than My Hair received an Honorable Mention in the 2026 Plentitides Flash Fiction Prize.
