For thousands of years, people have turned to dreams for healing, prophecy, divination, and encounters with gods, ancestors, and spirits. Plants have long accompanied these journeys, from the sacred blue lotus of ancient Egypt to the mugwort of European dream folklore. Across cultures, herbs have been used to prepare the body and mind for sleep, encourage vivid dreams, enhance dream recall, and invite extraordinary experiences.
In this multiweek course, herbalist, dreamworker, and author Audrey Gilbert will invite us into the enchanted world of the dream apothecary, where botanical medicine, folklore, ritual, and the mysterious language of dreams meet.
Over the course of four weeks, we'll explore the history and practice of dream incubation and divination, the traditional uses of oneirogens (plants and substances associated with dreaming), and what contemporary research reveals about the relationships between herbs, sleep, memory, and consciousness. Along the way, we'll meet a fascinating cast of botanical allies, including mugwort, blue lotus, rosemary, and other plants associated with dreaming, prophecy, protection, and visionary experience.
Through guided imagery, journaling, dream sharing, and simple spells and rituals, participants will learn to create their own dream apothecary and experiment with botanical dream practices between classes. We'll explore teas, aromatic herbs, dream pillows, offerings, and intentional dream incubation, as well as ways to cultivate relationships with plants that appear spontaneously in dreams.
We'll also venture into some of the stranger questions that arise when we begin dreaming with plants. Can dreams reveal things we don't consciously know? Can plants appear as healers, guides, or messengers? And what might happen when we invite the botanical world into our dreaming lives?
Whether you're a big dreamer, a plant lover, a practitioner of magic, or simply curious about the mysteries of dreaming, you'll leave with a deeper relationship to the plants that can help you unlock the power of your dreams, and the practical tools for remembering, exploring, and enchanting your dreams.
