A self portrait is an artwork that reflects the intimate relationship of the creator with themselves. Sometimes raw and revealing, such pieces can show us how the artist perceives, explores, and interacts with their world.
This class will guide students in creating, renewing, and rediscovering their connection with the self and inner images via the creative process of self-portrait making. Students will create one or a series of self-portraits, exploring a constructive dialogue with the intent of eliciting a self healing process along the way. The class will include illustrated lectures, autobiographical work, mindfulness art exercises, journaling, shadow work perspectives, sharing, and diverse art prompts. There will be ample art experimentation and playful self-reflective work as we explore the possibilities of self-portraiture as an active, inspiring, individual self-care practice.
Over the course of the class, we will analyze and discuss works by a variety of artists, seeking inspiraiton for our own work. We will infuse our own mindful personal work into an interpretative transformative practice, defining a new creative inner perspective. At the end of the course, students will be able to utilize the transformative elements of self-portraiture to create their own work or series of works in the medium and form of their choice.
This class is designed for artists of all mediums and levels who want to explore and engage with a self-dialogue in a creative and safe group setting.
Teté Montero is a Mexican artist and educator, death doula, unicorn enchantress, story teller and weaver, by choice. She is neurodivergent by neurology, a self appointed renaissance woman, and textile arts teacher. She apprenticed under the care of master weaver Kenzo Jo in textile Saori art while in Japan. In addition, she has studied at University of Cambridge, Harvard University, The Hospice Association, Upaya Zen Center, and the Authentic Presence Organization. Her focus has been in medical studies, contemplative end of life care, medieval studies, socially engaged Buddhism and art. She currently runs a fiber art studio in Mexico City with the ghost of her rambunctious dog Kayi. She is Buddhist too!
