In her book Sacred Disobedience, religious studies professor Sharon Coggan traces the history of the ancient Greek God Pan, who became distorted into the image of the Devil in early Christianity. When Pan was demonized, the powerful qualities he represented, became repressed, as Pan’s visage twisted into the model of the Devil, who bears the horns, beard, and the lower body of a goat. This was the goat God, Pan!
This book constitutes a Jungian analysis of this development. Jung sees the dark side—which he called the Shadow—very differently than other theorists. In his view, the dark side needs to be incorporated, embraced in the psychic system, both personally and collectively. If contents of the psyche become repressed, they distort, and grow more powerful or “inflate,“ to cripple the psyche that refuses to incorporate these split off elements. It becomes important then, to understand what qualities the primitive goat God carried, to appreciate what was repressed in the western psycho-spiritual system, and what subsequently needs reintegration.
In this talk, Dr. Coggan will present the fascinating history of a nature god turned symbol of evil as examined through a Jungian lens.
Sharon L. Coggan, PhD., earned the B.A. from the University of Denver, the M.T.S. (Master of Theological Studies) from Harvard Divinity School, the M.A. from Stanford University, and the Ph.D. from Syracuse University. She was an Associate Professor C/T and the Director of the Religious Studies Program at University of Colorado Denver, a program she created, before retiring in August 2020. She offers a range of classes on religion and on Jungian Thought: World Religions, Concepts of the Soul, Concepts of God, Death and Afterlife, Mysticism, Eastern Thought, Myth and Symbol, Classical Mythology, Perspectives on Good and Evil, Perspectives on Dream Analysis, and the Hero’s Journey. She still offers these classes in smaller venues now that she is happily retired. She remains an active Board member on the Board of Directors of the C. G. Jung Society of Colorado, in Denver. She is the author of the book, Sacred Disobedience: A Jungian Analysis of the Saga of Pan and the Devil, from Lexington Press, which came out in 2020.
