In this four week workshop—led by poet Elizabeth Metzger, poetry editor for The Los Angeles Review of Books —we will read and discuss a variety of poems and supplementary texts exploring pain.
Taking those texts as inspiration, we will workshop poems of our own, written in response to writing prompts related to pain, physical and metaphysical. We will explore how language captures and changes the experience of pain to make it shareable and even beautiful.
Over the course of four weeks, we will explore topic including the body, eros, religion, and illness We will read and discuss the poetry of Emily Dickinson, Max Ritvo, Victoria Chang, Franz Wright, Lucie Brock-Broido, Rachel Eliza Griffiths, and Frank Bidart, along with supplementary texts by Elaine Scarry, Soren Kierkegaard, Simone Weil, and Susan Sontag. Students will leave class with four poem drafts and workshop feedback (oral and written) on two poems.
Elizabeth Metzger is the author of The Going Is Forever and Lying In, as well as The Spirit Papers, winner of the Juniper Prize for Poetry. She has published two chapbooks, Bed and The Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death. Her poems have recently appeared in The New Yorker, The Paris Review, The New York Review, TLS, and Poetry. She is a poetry editor at The Los Angeles Review of Books and teaches poetry at 92NY and Columbia University.
