Nine-Eye Workshop
See Differently. Make Differently.
The question for any creative practice is not only what are you making, but what are you seeing, and how?
The Nine-Eye Workshop is a four-session experiential exploration for artists, writers, makers, and anyone who works creatively and wants to go deeper. We'll work with a unique, nine-part cosmology developed by artist Rebecca Purcell, which offers nine ways of seeing, nine lenses into our creative processes. Running alongside will be an at-home project in which we will create a small framed eye to serve as a physical record of where the workshop takes us.
The eye has never been just an organ. Across cultures and centuries, it has carried mythological, spiritual, psychological, and artistic weight, and has long been viewed as a portal to the unseen. We’ll use this powerful symbol as the basis of an experiential exploration designed to draw on our complex relationship with the eye to expand how it sees , and to investigate how seeing relates to our other senses, our imagination, and our visionary inner eye. In particular, we will seek to use it as means of discovering our own unique way of looking, seeing, perceiving, and conceiving.
Because what we see — and how — is where our work begins.
Every session will weave together narrated text, curated visual imagery, and short in-class writing, drawing, and looking exercises tied to that session's particular set of lenses. Each class will close with a craft discussion, where participants can ask questions, share updates, and hear how others are approaching the work. By the end, your crafted eye will become a talisman, embodying your own way of seeing.
You will leave with an expanded connection to the art of looking and a sketchbook filled with generative material. And you'll leave with the talisman itself — a made object, held in your hands, that looks back at you.

Navigating the spaces between the exoteric and the esoteric, Rebecca Purcell is a multidisciplinary creative practitioner. Her work is threaded through with an elaborate cosmology that treats aesthetics as a source for reaching the hidden recesses of creativity.
That thread runs through more than thirty years of work in set/still life styling, writing, art, design, and handcrafting — work built, at its core, on a trained eye for objects, arrangement, and meaning. She has helped shape contemporary bohemian style as visual director of A.B.C. Home in the 1990s; freelance set stylist and art director for Anthropologie catalog and leading home design brands; and author of the beloved interior design book Interior Alchemy (William Morrow). Her influence helped shape the modern bohemian aesthetic, she has been featured in Nest, Casa Vogue, and New York Magazine, with her work also appearing in the books Creative Living by Robyn Lea and Maverick Homes by Miv Watts.
After a profound shift in 2018, Purcell began channeling her many interests into what she calls 'creating a Culture of the Self,' a practice that now takes shape through found-material objects, guided workshops, cosmology-based card readings, and writing, all aimed at helping others cultivate a culture of their own.
