In January 1906, a Swedish artist named Hilma af Klint began to receive requests from spirits during séances to create a series of paintings which would depict the spiritual plane. These spirits—named Amaliel, Gregor, and Ananda—were conveying messages to her from the ‘High Ones’.
She writes in her notebooks “I am so small, I am so insignificant but the force that flows through me is so powerful that I must go forward.” And in another passage she writes “The experiments I have undertaken…will astound humanity.”
Hilma saw this series of paintings as the most important work of her life. But the nonrepresentational and abstract style of the works was decades ahead of its time. The exterior world of her time was not yet ready to engage with, appreciate, and understand these masterpieces. It is my hope that one hundred years later, our world is.
What is the spiritual message of Hilma’s Paintings for the Temple series? And how do we understand the intersection between spirituality and art? That is the ambitious purpose of this presentation.
MJDorian is a multidisciplinary artist most recently known for his work as host & creator of the podcast: Creative Codex. The show is an imaginative lecture series about the most consequential creative geniuses in history. What brings about a once-in-a-generation genius? And how do we improve our own creative processes?
In addition to writing and researching the creative geniuses featured in Creative Codex (ex: Frida Kahlo, William Blake, Emily Dickinson, Carl Jung, etc.) MJ also composes the music for every episode. The guiding principle of the show is to create a sonic portrait of each figure, exploring their life and work through a humanistic lens.
Before Creative Codex, MJ earned a Masters in Film Scoring from NYU. After graduating he worked in the film industry for 10 years and earned various accolades including Best Original Score for the feature film Ontologica. (VISIONFEST 11).
