Jesi Bender’s new novel explores Victorian girlhood in Burned-over New York, where death hovered close and people learned how to become conduits between this world and the next. Thirteen-year-old Ambrétte Memenon has lived her entire life estranged from her family. After a series of financial failures, they reunite in upstate NY in the Spring of 1896. Together in the new house but basically strangers, Ambrétte endeavors to connect to her parents through their interests: Spiritualism for her Maman and electricity for her Papa.
In her pursuit, Ambrétte is drawn into a deep abyss of the unknown as she learns more about both death and the electric spark of the human spirit.
Carole Maso calls Child of Light "a dark pleasure".
Jesi Bender is the author of experimental historical novels Child of Light (Whiskey Tit, 2025) and The Book of the Last Word (Whiskey Tit, 2019), the plays Crux (Sagging Mensicus, forthcoming) and Kinderkrankenhaus (Sagging Meniscus, 2021), and the chapbook Dangerous Women (dancing girl press, 2022). In her spare time, she helms KERNPUNKT Press, a home for experimental writing.
