With chapters spanning everything from fairies to monsters, witches to mermaids—and artworks drawn from across continents and centuries—this volume invites us into enchanted realms that are at once awe-inspiring and unsettling. Within its pages, we encounter worlds filled with drama, beauty, and a longing for something just beyond reach: at times charming and elegiac, at others grotesque and macabre, yet always transcendent. The collection stands as a testament to the artist’s pleasure in invention—the delight of conjuring atmosphere, beguiling and seducing, and startling the viewer.
From the haunting visions of Golden Age illustrators like Arthur Rackham, Kay Nielsen, and Maxfield Parrish, to the Pre-Raphaelite romanticism of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, the symbolist shimmer of Gustav Klimt, and the dreamlike surrealism of Leonora Carrington, the book gathers a breathtaking array of works that reveal the enduring power of fairy tale imagery.
