This fall, join mythologist Alicia King Anderson for a ritual workshop celebrating and exploring harvest myths as we honor the Autumn Equinox. We will perform a small ritual together to celebrate the equinox, and brainstorm ideas for how you can bring this harvest celebration home over the coming months.
Over the course of 2 hours, we will explore the stories of deities who have visited the underworld and come back to tell the tale, with a special focus on those related to grain and the harvest. We will immerse ourselves in the myth of Persephone, underworld goddess of Ancient Greece. We will also examine the myth of Inanna of ancient Sumer, and the journey of her consort, Dumuzi to the underworld realms of her sister Ereshkigal. We will also unpack the folk horror archetype of the rex nemorensis, or Harvest king, often ritually sacrificed to ensure fruitful crops.
From the appearance of the Virgo constellation on the horizon to the "String-Up Sisters" of Orion's Belt triggering harvest, let's look at autumnal myth.
Alicia King Anderson has a Ph.D. in Mythological Studies and Depth Psychology. She is a mythologist and coach based in New Mexico. She enjoys teaching ritual theory, ritual design, and offering ways to communicate with the unconscious. She recently published a book, Burnout Recovery through North Atlantic Books.
