Athena stands as the ancient Greek goddess of war, wisdom, weaving, and reason; paradoxically, she is also a site of refuge for the displaced. Through her twin signs of the owl and the gorgon, she traffics in a distinct kind of darkness that is both mystical and historical. By crossing the mythological perspectives of Karl Kerényi with the Afroasiatic historical insights of Martin Bernal, this lecture traces Athena's ancestral origins in North Africa (Sais) to her ultimate adaptation within the Greek patriarchal pantheon.
Moving away from rigid, linear frameworks of "origins" or "authenticity," Wolfe will treat Greek religion fractally, as an ongoing process of re-routing, remixing, and diasporic entanglement. Using this lens, we can unearth Athena’s paradoxical mysteries: a goddess of reason who operates in shadow, a virgin who sublimates the matriarchal power associated with the Gorgon, and a sanctuary for the displaced whose petrifying, gorgon-like gaze demands a confrontation with our own unseen depths.
Ultimately, this framework opens a space for a reparative, mystical reading of Athena, returning her to her submerged matriarchal and African roots, adapted explicitly for today’s urgent work of decolonization.
Forrest Wolfe is a creative nonfiction author who writes at the intersection of madness, myth, mysticiam, and machine intelligence.
