La Catrina, an icon of Mexican culture, was created by the artist José Guadalupe Posada in a legendary etching circa 1910. It was intended as a satirical portrait of those Mexican natives who, Posada felt, were aspiring to adopt European aristocratic traditions in the pre-revolutionary era.
