Grand Bois Gourd Rattle from Considered Trifles

$50.00

Grand Bois.  He is the spirit who guards the forest.  He also knows medicinal secrets which he shares with believers.  He is depicted as part man and part tree.  In Christian iconography, his counterpart is St. Sebastian who was martyred while tied to a tree.

Skillfully carved and shaded, this beautiful gourd is in excellent condition. Tied by leather straps on the side where the ears might be, are two cowrie shells. Once considered currency, the cowrie also symbolizes fertility and prosperity. Cowrie shells are also used in divination due to their association with the ancestral realm.
