This ex-voto, dated 1937, depicts a child being rescued from a burning building while the townsfolk pray on their knees. The miracle working Virgin of San Juan de los Lagos floats in the upper right corner, attended by cherubs. The first miracle attributed to her—restoring an acrobat back to life—took place in1623. Her depiction is known as a statue painting, and the likeness is of her statue in the shrine. The story and prayer of thanks is written across the bottom.
An ex-voto is a votive offering to a saint or a divinity, given in fulfillment of a vow (hence the Latin term, short for ex voto suscepto, "from the vow made") or in gratitude or devotion.
