El Nino de Atocha Ex-Voto from Considered Trifles

$215.00

This ex-votod depicts the miracle working El Nino de Atocha. It looks like a retablo, but in small letters it says “por fabor resibido.” El Nino’s story originates in Atocha, Spain during the Moorish invasion. A child dressed as a pilgrim appeared near a jail where Spanish prisoners were being held. Even though he carried a small basket and gourd for water, he was able to feed all the prisoners. His shrine is in Plateros, Zacatecas. He is invoked for people in danger, especially travelers.

An ex-voto is a votive offering to a saint or a divinity, given in fulfillment of a vow (hence the Latin term, short for ex voto suscepto, "from the vow made") or in gratitude or devotion.
