This Ecuadoran folk painting of a healing ceremony has a fascinating history. This type of painting came into being at the encouragement of Olga Fisch, a folk art collector and well known designer whose Jewish Hungarian family fled Nazi Germany and settled in Ecuador. She became interested in the local tradition of the drums that were made for the feast of Corpus Christi, that featured richly detailed paintings of dancers on hide and drumskin. Olga suggested that the local artists make drum paintings of events in their life and their village for tourists. With highly decorated wood frames these paintings make no distinction between the natural and supernatural world.
