Cougar Attack Mid-Century Ex-Voto from Considered Trifles

$137.00

Dated 1948 this ex-voto is of a cougar attacking a horse.

This ex-voto is dedicated to the Virgin of San Juan de los Lagos. The shrine is in Jalisco, and is a very popular pilgrimage site. The first miracle attributed to her—restoring an acrobat back to life—took place in 1623. In this ex voto, she floats in the sky above the scene of attack while two men run in from the woods with shotguns. A story and prayer of thanks is faintly painted into the bottom.

An ex-voto is a votive offering to a saint or a divinity, given in fulfillment of a vow (hence the Latin term, short for ex voto suscepto, "from the vow made") or in gratitude or devotion.

Oil on tin with four nail holes in each corner, a very slight amount of color missing from the left bottom corner.
