In Mexico, mermaids are part of the popular imagination. Often thought to be the syncretization of Chalchiuhtlicue the Aztec deity of water, rivers and sea with the western mermaids from the Spanish folklore. They are famously featured as one of the 54 cards of the Loteria Mexicana as “La Sirena”.
