Sheela Na Gigs are ancient hag goddesses seen on medieval churches in Ireland and England. Depicted as naked women displaying their vulvas, many believe they were apotropaic figures meant to protect against death, evil and the demonic.

In the artist’s own words, “I make them for protection, to resist the patriarchal structures that oppress women and nonbinary people, and to honor the cycle of death and rebirth, which she represents among other things. This Sheela was ritually made with the energies of Mars and chaos, for raw energy, passion, confidence, and independence.”

This hand-made piece is made with polymer clay, wood, acrylic paint, glass, coral, magnesite, and dumortierite quartz crystals.
