This digital print of a scratchboard drawing is an exploration of the internal conflict that arises from the temptations of modern luxuries like air conditioning and plane travel and the awareness of their impact on nature. Given the challenges of protect nature in the 21st century, Samworth explores our quest to take meaningful action.
Kate Samworth develops images from her imagination that combine years of observational drawing practice with the study of 16th and 17th century engravings. Her imagery is inspired by observing wildlife and natural and man-made changes to the environment.
She is an artist, illustrator, and educator in Maryland. Her background in printmaking is evident in her choice of scratchboard, which was developed in the early 19th century to mimic wood engravings. Scratchboard consists of a board coated with fine white clay and coated in black ink. The ink is removed to reveal the white beneath. Samworth draws with an Exacto blade because it allows for minute details and fine lines.
Samworth teaches online at several art schools including the Rhode Island School of Design, Minneapolis College of Art and Design, PA Academy of the Fine Arts, and more. Her course on The Art of Natural History is available through Morbid Anatomy.
