This original oil painting by Colombian-born artist Maria Pia Mosquera is informed by medieval representation of the devil and demons as comic tempters and tricksters. “Party Hat” is a humorous depiction of the temptations that strike us all in everyday life. and our efforts to blame our misfortunes on an evil power. Medieval demons often had faces in strange places – a reference to the inversion of the divine order that the fallen angels represented.

Maria Pia Mosquera (b. 1977) is a Colombian-born artist and designer, based in Sydney, Australia. Her current work explores our ambiguous relationship with death through imagery that challenges the macabre with wry humour, using the pervasive religious symbolism of Hispanic culture to bring the otherworldly into the everyday. Her work is held in various private collections in Australia and overseas.
