Starting with myths of gods and magicians who made statues walk and talk, this talk by artist and educator Jason Lahman will cover the ancient technologies that brought these miracles to life, Rene Descartes and 18th-century automata, and E.T.A Hoffmann and the Romantics. The lecture will end in the aftermath of the First World War, the coining of the word “Robot” by Karl Capek, and the dawning of the computer age.
