Join us to explore your favorite fairy tales through an animistic, ancestral lens: shape-shifting, animal teachers, journeysto exotic places, death and rebirth, and more. We will fly, or journey, through three spiritual realms to discover the wisdom hidden in those tales. Then we will create our own memento of the experience through writing or art.
Each participant should bring an eye cover, journal, and favorite writing utensils. Art materials will be provided and are included in the workshop fee. No previous journeying experience is necessary.

Part lecture and part interactive workshop, this workshop will dig into the theories that underly fairy tale retellings, the psychological and sociological functions of the tales, and retelling tactics that work. The workshop portions of the session include creative prompts and practice techniques, and leave space for Q&A around applying theory to attendees' current retelling projects.

This workshop is for artists, writers, and creatives interested intransmogrificationand playful explorations of the surreal, magical, and fantastical. Following a short lecture, and drawing from myth, ritual, and folklore, we will use exquisite corpse, Dadaist poetry, and other exercises to imagine our own dark, enchanted tales about death and transformation.
The folklore of corpse transformation spans thousands of years and often goes beyondphysicalchange, symbolizing adaptability, deception, death, and the fluid boundary between mortal and spirit realms. From Tibetan ro-langs to Slavic vampires, corpses rarely stay dead, acting as a bridge between the physical world and the mysteries of spirits and the underworld. Rather than simply decaying, they rise from graves, cross into new states of being, take the form of other animals, become sacred mounds, or fuse into the material world as haunting musical instruments.
In this workshop, we will mimic the ever-changing nature of the transformed corpse to allow horror, magical realism, and the surreal to emerge in our own artistic practices. All levels are welcome. Please bring one or two small items to place on our altar and serve as inspiration throughout our time together. All other materials will be provided.
