What is perversion? Is it a type of illegal behavior, an inherent personality type, a clinical diagnosis?
This talk—presented by end-of-life doula and film scholar Dr. Eddie Gamarra—will draw from foundational psychodynamic thinkers from Sigmund Freud to Esther Perel as well as pop culture examinations in literature and film, including such classics as Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's Venus in Furs and the documentary Sick: The Life and Death of Bob Flanagan, Supermasochist. He will ask if we might also approach perversion as a way of handling the extreme emotions surrounding sex and death—as well as physical and emotional pain & pleasure—by creating character roles and writing scripts in order to negotiate the risks involved when feeling those extreme emotions.
Eddie Gamarra, PhD., studied film, literature and Freud since high school. Eddie helped establish Emory University's Psychoanalytic Studies Program. He was also one of the first non-clinicians to become a Fellow of the American Psychoanalytic Association. A certified End-of-Life Doula from the University of Vermont, Eddie also spent over 25 years working i the entertainment industry as a Literary Manager and then a studio Exec working across animated and live action film & TV, as well as book publishing. He now runs a consulting and production company called Gamarra Media.
