The alter ego is a gateway into the neon-lit underworld of underground nightlife—a glitter-soaked rebellion against the ordinary, where the decadent and surreal are celebrated. In the smoky corners of late-night clubs, underground cabarets, and DIY drag dive bars, it’s an irresistible invitation to transcend the everyday and reshape reality.
For the creatures of the night—drag artists, club kids, queer punks, and cabaret misfits—creating an alter ego is a form of personal alchemy. It’s about turning the mundane into the extraordinary, birthing colourful characters and strange personas from greasepaint and thrift-store treasures, with unrestrained pleasure and audacious defiance.
This tradition of radical reinvention pulses through the decades. The Blitz Kids of 1980s London transformed the dancefloor into a performative catwalk of New Romantic excess, fusing fashion and gender play into a weirdly hedonistic wonderland. The Club Kids of 1990s New York went even further—drenched in lipstick, latex and chaos, they reshaped nightlife and pushed the boundaries of art and excess. And before them, New Wave icon Klaus Nomi’s alien opera persona, Ziggy Stardust’s androgynous Starman fantasy, Divine’s punk drag glamour, and Leigh Bowery’s grotesque genius ripped apart the fabric of convention, making space for the bizarre, the beautiful, and the disenfranchised.
Tonight, join artist Le Pustra for a lively chat as we explore the transformative power of colourful alter egos in alternative nightlife and the cabaret scene. We’ll dive into the intoxicating allure of this glittery and gritty world where high camp fashion reigns and nocturnal superstar characters own the night! Le Pustra will also share a candid reflection on his own colourful evolution—from outsider to a living work of art, à la Luisa Casati. From accidental cabaret performer-turned-occasional club kid and avant-garde fashion muse to creative director and television mangenue, the legacy of Le Pustra is a testament to the enduring power of art to break down barriers and redefine what it means to be human.
"Le Pustra has emerged as an iconic figure in the revival of cabaret, neo-vaudeville, and avant-garde performance art. With over 20 years in the industry, his work fuses theater, drag, and gothic aesthetics—evoking early 20th-century decadence while pushing the boundaries of contemporary performance and redefining beauty as a bold, transformative force that celebrates individuality and the surreal.
Based in Berlin, Le Pustra is a Creative Director, Actor, Singer, and celebrated Kunstfigur, known for his striking persona marked by white-faced makeup and whimsical styling. Drawing inspiration from Weimar-era Berlin, Dadaism, New Objectivity, and artists like Man Ray, Jeanne Mammen, and Otto Dix, his performances blend circus, silent film aesthetics, and avant-garde art movements.
Known for his haunting (and often melancholic) performances, Le Pustra explores themes of dreams, identity, isolation, and transformation. His work has captivated audiences across the globe, from London Fashion Week to historic European concert halls. He is also acclaimed for his role as ""Edwina Morell"" in the award-winning German neo-noir crime drama, Babylon Berlin (Seasons 3–5) and as the visionary behind the all-time sold-out Le Pustra’s Kabarett der Namenlosen (2016–2023), a Weimar-inspired theatrical production.
