In this illustrated talk, Professor Johnson will discuss the origin and evolution of the "monstrous bitch," an archetype of female monstrosity that western culture has spent 4000 years creating, refining, and deploying to keep women in a state of fear and oppression. To draw out this history, she will use ancient literature, historical records, modern literature, and film.

Professor Johnson is a medievalist turned horror scholar. She has published three books on the Middle Ages: Practicing Literary Theory in the Late Middle Ages (Chicago 2013); Dramatizing Contemplation (Chicago 2018); and Waste and the Wasters (Chicago 2023); more recently, she published Scream with Me: Horror Films and the Rise of American Feminism (Atria 2025) and Monstrous Bitch: A History of Terrifying Women (Princeton 2026).
