“I Ate His Heart.” Witnesses discovered “Bernard” at the crime scene the next morning, repeating this phrase over and over. His arrival at the Château-Thierry prison—where psychologist and criminologist Nathalie von Zelowitz works—marked the beginning of a unique psychotherapy and led her to write the new book I Ate His Heart: Interviews with a Cannibal. This lecture will invite you to join the author in her journey not only into the dark and extreme psychology, perspectives and emotions of Bernard, but also related interrogations concerning society, the law, insanity, incarceration, taboos and psychology. She will neither sensationalize nor excuse, but rather try to shed light on humanity, through the prism of this extraordinary case.

Nathalie von Zelowitz started studying psychology in the late 1980s, intrigued by topics that were considered marginal at the time: serial killers, sex offenders, sexual perversion, and more. She has spent 30 years working in a prison that holds France’s most extreme and disturbed inmates, participating in pioneering psychological research concerning sexual criminals, and leading to the publication of “I Ate His Heart.”
