In-Person Walking Tour · The Cemetery Language of Flowers at Greenwood Cemetery with Allison C. Meier

$25.00
Sold Out

Sunday, October 8
1 - 2:30 pm
Location: Green-Wood Cemetery, 500 25th St, Brooklyn, NY 11232 (map here)
Meet at the main entrance’s Gothic arch

Floriography, or the language of flowers, was incredibly popular in the 19th century, when Green-Wood Cemetery opened its gates in Brooklyn. This fascination with the symbolism of flowers, whether pansies for thoughts or roses for love, influenced the design of memorials just as it did fashion and art. This walk will invite participants to decode the hidden messages of death's bouquet that appear on the tombs.

Allison C. Meier is a Brooklyn-based writer, editor, and researcher. Her book Grave was published this year by Bloomsbury as part of the Object Lessons book series. She is the editor of Fine Books & Collections magazine and has bylines in the New York Times, CityLab, National Geographic, Smithsonian, and many other publications. She is a licensed NYC sightseeing guide who regularly leads tours in cemeteries.
