The first girl to be murdered in a slasher movie is often dismissed by viewers as a pretty airhead whose sole purpose in the film is to run around in her underwear screaming. In reality, her death is the most crucial scene in the film, setting in motion a series of events that lead her counterpart, the final girl, to vanquish the killer. Without her death, there would be no story! Whilst the final girl survives the movie, she must live with the trauma of the killer's rampage, forever looking over her shoulder in the sequels. This illustrated talk will explore the first girl who is the only character who does not know that she is in a horror film and, consequently, lives life to the full. In this introduction to Bloody Women! Slasher Films and the Female Viewer—available on-demand with Morbid Anatomy—Eleanor and Marybec consider how our lives might be improved if we were all a little more first girl.
Dr. Eleanor Reynolds and Dr. Marybec Griffin are the Bloody Women duo that examines femininity in slasher films. Eleanor is an independent academic researching the abject female body. She writes historical novels featuring female protagonists with a passion for science, and is represented by Janklow and Nesbit UK. Marybec is an Assistant Professor at the Rutgers University School of Public Health. Her research focuses on sexual health, menstrual stigma, and the impact of media (music and film) on identity and behavior.
