The Victorian era was notorious for its eccentricities, but perhaps none was quite as bizarre as society's feverish fascination with ancient Egypt. Fueled by a potent mix of imperial expansion, colonial guilt, and a morbidly romantic appetitefor the macabre, 19th-century England developed a deeply unsettling obsession with the ancient world.
Join Dr. Jay Sullivan, author of Egyptian Gothic, for a captivating online talk that peels back the layers of modern Egyptomania. From the early, stomach-churning days of consuming ground-up mummies as medical treatments to the glittering, global frenzy of "Tutmania," Dr. Sullivan will guide you through an era where history, horror, and high society spectacularly collided.
Along this macabre journey, Dr. Sullivan will answer some of the most outrageous historical questions to emerge from the 19th century: What exactly was the secret ingredient in "mummy brown" paint? Which eccentric historical figure harbored a secret collection of mummified anatomy? And did a cursed Egyptian mummy actually cause the sinking of the Titanic?
Dr Jay Sullivan is a writer and researcher based in South London. She holds a PhD from the University of Roehampton and an MA in Victorian Studies from Birkbeck College. Her research blends museum, sensory, and gothic studies with a focus on the Victorian Egyptianised Gothic genre. Egyptian Gothic 1884-1920, published by Palgrave MacMillan in 2025, is her first book.
