Fear on Film will take you on an intensive, analytical, and entertaining investigation into the history of the horror film, from the pioneering days of Melies and Murnau, to Lon Chaney and the rise of Universal monsters, to Val Lewton's moody chillers, the atomic age, the Italian and British Gothic revival, Hitchcock, teen-targeted films from AIP and Roger Corman, to the American New Wave of the 1970s, slasher and "body count" movies, Satanic Panic in the 1980s, the modern age and everything in between.

Over the course of six weeks, students will acquire a comprehensive knowledge of how the horror genre has evolved. We will examine changing trends in genre storytelling and technology and the ways in which societal unrest is reflected in the movies themselves. We will also take a deep dive into many of horror and dark fantasy cinema’s most important and influential films and figures.

Your guide will be Chris Alexander, former editor-in-chief of the iconic horror film magazine Fangoria, award-winning director of films like Queen of Blood, Parasite Lady, Space Vampire and Necropolis: Legion, and author of Corman/Poe: Exploring the Making of Roger Corman’s Edgar Allan Poe Films, 1960-1964.

Get ready for a fun, exciting, intelligent, and edifying 6-week exploration into the history of the motion picture using the wild, weird, and wonderful world of horror as an entry point.

Chris Alexander is a Canadian-based writer, filmmaker and music composer. He is the former editor-in-chief of iconic horror film magazine Fangoria and the editor-in-chief/co-founder of Delirium magazine as well as the writer, director and composer of numerous avant-garde feature horror movies, including Queen of Blood, Space Vampire, Scream of the Blind Dead, Parasite Lady, and Female Werewolf. He was a professor of horror film history at Canada’s Sheridan College and is the author of the bestselling book Corman/Poe, released in 2023 and the upcoming Art! Trash! Terror! both from Britain’s Headpress Publishing.
