Join filmmaker Chris Alexander—former editor-in-chief of Fangoria—for a 6-class course that not only explores the iconic dark fantasy TV series The Twilight Zone (1959-1964) but also the man who created it, visionary writer and moralist Rod Serling. From his humble origins, to his dehumanizing wartimes experiences, to his first taste finding fame as a writer for television and the ensuing battles with sponsors and censors that would eventually lead to the birth of his most famous creation, Serling's story is the very soul of The Twilight Zone itself.
The genesis of the program will be thoroughly examined, along with its influence on popular culture.We will also spend ample time dissecting key episodes, both the intensely personal ones penned by Serling, and the supporting stories written by his core collaborators, equally revered talents like Charles Beaumont and Richard Matheson. Through group discussion, lectures, clips and interviews, learners will emerge with a deeper appreciation of The Twilight Zone, a clearer picture of its place in American TV's "Golden Age" and discuss how the show continues to inform and inspire.
Chris Alexander is a Canadian-based writer, filmmaker and music composer. He is the former editor-in-chief of iconic horror film magazine Fangoria and the editor-in-chief/co-founder of Delirium magazine as well as the writer, director and composer of numerous avant-garde feature horror movies, including Queen of Blood, Space Vampire, Scream of the Blind Dead, Parasite Lady, and Female Werewolf. He was a professor of horror film history at Canada’s Sheridan College and is the author of the bestselling book Corman/Poe, released in 2023 and the upcoming Art! Trash! Terror!, both from Britain’s Headpress Publishing.
