Uncover the stories that have shaped you, and discover new ways to tell them. This online creative writing workshop — guided by podcaster, professor, and author Eric Huang — invites participants to explore the rich terrain of folklore, legend, and inherited traditions drawn from their own cultural backgrounds, family histories, and lived experience as the inspiration for creative writing.
Over eight engaging 90-minute sessions, we’ll explore landscapes of myth and memory. We will also explore how oral tales, spiritual frameworks, and archetypal figures can be reimagined for a 21st-century audience. Whether you're drawn to writing a novel, a children’s book, or a hybrid literary form, this workshop will help you shape your ideas into a compelling piece.
Each session will combine lively discussion, generative exercises, and peer feedback paired with thoughtful prompts to help you tap into the stories that shape your sense of self, while challenging dominant narratives and reframing traditional tales through a post-colonial, contemporary lens. The course will culminate in the development of a short creative piece or excerpt. Each participant will receive one hour of one-on-one workshopping with the instructor.
Eric Huang brings both scholarly insight and personal passion to the class. His Guardians of the New Moon series is a loving homage to the legends and ancestral history of his Chinese heritage, while his Saint Podcast — an exploration of the sacred and profane in saints’ legends — reflects a Catholic upbringing and an enduring fascination with how myth, identity, and belief intersect in storytelling.
Join us to celebrate the speculative tales that have shaped who you are—and discover the ones you might be ready to share with the world.
Eric Huang wanted to be a paleontologist. Field work didn't live up to his Jurassic Park dreams, though, so he spent a year in a variety of soul-destroying jobs in Hollywood before becoming secretary to the Creative Director at Disney Publishing. The temp job turned into a career in books spanning three decades and three continents—including editor and publisher roles at Penguin and with LEGO Books. Today Eric is an author, podcaster, and Deputy Programme Director for the Creative Writing and Publishing master’s programmes at City St George’s, University of London.
