Frank Herbert's Dune series stands as one of literature's most profound explorations of consciousness, power, and human transformation. This comprehensive 8-week course will invite participants to traverse the desert landscapes of Arrakis while simultaneously navigating the inner terrain of their own psyche through the wisdom of Carl Jung's depth psychology.

Over eight carefully structured sessions, we'll trace Paul Atreides' hero's journey as a blueprint for psychological individuation—the lifelong process of becoming who we truly are. From his initial encounter with the shadow forces of House Harkonnen to his ultimate transcendence of ordinary consciousness, Paul's path illuminates our own struggles with fear, power, sacrifice, and authentic selfhood. We'll explore how Jessica embodies the archetypal feminine wisdom, how the Bene Gesserit represent the collective unconscious made manifest, and how Leto II's golden path speaks to the tension between personal fulfillment and service to something greater.

Each 90-minute session will balance scholarly analysis with experiential learning. Illustrated lectures will ground participants in both Herbert's literary genius and Jung's psychological insights, followed by guided discussion that will create space for personal reflection and integration. Participants will engage with concepts such as prescient dreaming as active imagination, the spice as a symbol for consciousness-expanding practices, and the ecological thinking that connects outer sustainability with inner wholeness.

This course is designed for thoughtful readers, psychology enthusiasts, and anyone drawn to use great literature as a vehicle for personal growth. No prior knowledge of Jungian psychology is required—only curiosity about the connections between outer adventure and inner transformation. By the course’s end, participants will have gained not only a deeper appreciation for Herbert's masterwork but also practical tools for navigating their own hero's journey with greater awareness and purpose.

STUDENTS WILL NEED: Copies of Dune, Dune Messiah, and Children of Dune by Frank Herbert, as well as "Jung's Map of the Soul" by Murray Stein.

Jason D. Batt, Ph.D., explores archetypal psychology and speculative futures. His work bridges depth psychology, AI, and myth, co-editing Soul and the Machine. As a science fiction novelist (Onliest, Young Gods), he examines consciousness, identity, and cosmic meaning, advancing xenomythology—the myths humanity will carry and create among the stars ahead.
