The real world of Voodoo, Vodou, and African Traditional Religion is a sacred universe containing divine energies, spirit possessions, and harmony. In spite of negative media portrayals of zombies, evil dolls, sacrifice, and extreme abandon, the religions are in reality a complex system of nature-inspired beliefs.
The origins of humanity began in Africa, and the historical record of these spiritual traditions date back to at least the 4th Century BCE. Forged in connection to nature and one's proper place in the universe, these systems serve as guiding lights pointing devotees to their true destiny.
Over the course of six weeks, we’ll learn the truth about these ancient traditions and how they've survived and thrived throughout the ages against extreme odds, while also unpacking the misconceptions surrounding these systems. We will elucidate the different traditions that make up the African Diaspora, including Vodou from Benin and Haiti, Nigerian Ifa, La Regla Lucumi (more commonly known as Santeria or Cuban Santo), New Orleans Voodoo, Low Country Hoodoo, Brazilian Candomble, and Obeah from Jamaica and Belize. We will examine not only the history of these time-honored religions, but also the mystery of herstory and the legacy of the divine feminine present which is always present here. We will also explore re-connecting and honoring of one's ancestors in each system, and the importance of finding a spiritual family. Divination and initiations will also be centered, along with the intricacies of finding, understanding and moving forward with these in a respectful way. The class will culminate with a self-guided ritual to honor one's ancestors and the local dead.
Participants will leave this class a deeper understanding of these fascinating traditions, find ways to respectfully honor and connect with these energies, and discover new paths towards ancestral connectio and ways to safely move forward if they so choose.
Lilith Dorsey M.F.A. had traditional education focused on Plant Science, Anthropology, and Film at NYU, and University of London, with their magickal training including initiations in Lucumi, Haitian Vodoun, and New Orleans Voodoo. They are a proud published Black author of Voodoo and Afro-Caribbean Paganism, Orishas, Goddesses and Voodoo Queens, and the new Tarot Every Witch Way.
