In an era where AI technologies increasingly shape our world, fundamental questions about human identity and the nature of consciousness demand attention beyond technical considerations. Drawing from ancient mythological narratives about non-human intelligence—from golems to robots—and contemporary psychological theories, this course examines how our relationship with AI reveals deeper patterns in the human psyche. The class will unpack how current anxieties and aspirations around AI echo timeless mythological themes about creation, hubris, and the boundaries between human and machine intelligence.
Led by Jason D. Batt, Ph.D.— technological philosopher, mythologist, and co-editor of the anthology ""Soul and the Machine,"—this discussion-based course will engage participants in analyzing AI through depth psychological concepts while exploring how these technologies reflect and potentially transform our understanding of consciousness, embodiment, and the sacred. Through guided discussions, hands-on exercises with AI tools, and creative explorations, students will develop frameworks for understanding AI not merely as technical innovation but as a mirror reflecting our deepest psychological patterns. Participants will emerge with a richer understanding of both AI's psychological dimensions and their own relationship to technology, equipped with conceptual tools to navigate an increasingly AI-integrated world with greater awareness and intentionality. No technical background is required—only curiosity about the soul in the age of the machine.
Jason D. Batt, Ph.D., is a technological philosopher, mythologist, futurist, artist, and writer specializing in mythologies of space exploration. He co-founded Deep Space Predictive Research Group, Project Lodestar, and the International Society of Mythology. He has authored three novels, edited three fiction anthologies, and his short fiction and scholarly work have appeared in numerous publications. Jason currently serves as Co-Managing Editor of the Beyond Earth Institute Space Policy Review, Associate Editor of the Journal of Space Philosophy.
