During a conversation with Maya Angelou, James Baldwin said: “The only way to live is knowing you’re going to die. If you’re afraid to die, you’ll never be able to live.” The fear of death is as natural as life—if we want to live, how can we learn to accept death?
In this generative workshop, we’ll read from examples of various genres that focus on Death as a literary theme, from the personification of Death like in Jose Saramago’s Death with Interruptions to the defiance against Death like in Clarice Lispector’s Agua Viva. From the seeds of these examples and other narrative prompts, we’ll create new writing using our fear of death as creative energy. We’ll share and discuss what we write; together, we’ll try to reconcile the desire for life with the inevitability of death. Depending on student interest, the last session will be used as an open Q&A on the publishing industry, the literary journal submission process, etc.
Jade Song is a writer and artist based in New York City. Lauded as “visionary and disturbing,” her debut novel Chlorine was selected as a New York Times Editor’s Choice, awarded the ALA Alex Award and the Writer’s Center First Novel Prize, and translated into four languages. Song’s second novel, I Love You Don’t Die, will be published in March 2026, and their debut short story collection, Ox Ghost Snake Demon, is forthcoming in 2027, both from William Morrow. Their short stories, essays, and creative nonfiction have appeared in literary magazines like Joyland, Missouri Review, Literary Hub, Teen Vogue, and Electric Literature, among others; Song has been a featured speaker, teacher, or presenter at The Writer’s Center, Amherst College, Tin House, The Miami Book Fair, Ellipsis Writing, The Asian American Writers’ Workshop, Montclair Literary Festival, and elsewhere.
