This hybrid class and workshop series explores the like-figure of the daimon, genius, and jinn, not only as creative muse, but as an expression of ancestry, lineage, and the world of the dead.
For thousands of years and across numerous cultures, this ambiguous entity has persisted in its liminal state, poised between divinity and earthly life, while remaining kindred with magicians, artists, and the mad alike. Who or what are they? Whether faery, jinn, or daimon, they share much with the ghosts of old, yet are still somehow distinct. We also find them persistently associatied with creativity, particularly artistic inspiration.
Illustrated lectures will consider how these beings overlap with the world of the dead, as well as different ways that writers, thinkers, artists, and cultural cosmovisions have situated creative inspiration and imagination. The instructor will also provide a variety of imaginative exercises — spanning automatic writing, dream work, astrology, and more — meant to offer a variety of gateways for connecting with the invisible world, and exploring one’s unique daimonic muse as a voice of ancestry.
This class is open to and encouraged for people of all backgrounds, including those who are separated from their birth family and/or culture for whatever reason. Ancestry, here, will be considered expansively, ranging from recent family to our shared heritage in the animal and plant kingdoms or beyond.
J.M. Hamade (they/them) is a writer, artist, educator, and astrologer based in New York City. Their work bridges contemporary creative modalities with archaic forms of knowing. Through practice as well as scholarly investigation, their areas of focus have been situated in the fields of lunar+stellar lore, Islamic esotericism, Hermeticism, and the dæmonic imagination. Their first full length book, Procession of the Night Theatre: An Exposition on the Lunar Stations (Revelore Press 2024) follows half a decade long research into the astrologies and magics of the lunar zodiac, initiated by their co-authorship and illustration of Ahmad al-Buni’s Shams al-Ma’arif: An Arabic Grimoire in Selected Translation (Revelore Press 2021) which deals extensively with like-mysteries. More published materials include essays, interviews, and illustrations with The Ingress, Hadean Press, The Mountain Astrologer, CAELi Review, Viridis Genii, and academic publications. They are also the founder of Mount Q Press, an occult publisher dedicated to experimental and underrepresented voices in contemporary esoterica, with two forthcoming books Afterlife Astrology: On the Soul’s Otherworldly Journey as the Sun and Beheni: A Contemporary Grimoire.
