In the autumn of 1913, Dr. Carl Gustav Jung suffered a mental breakdown. He began to experience recurring visions whenever his mind would wander. The visions were of a dramatic and apocalyptic nature: a river of blood overtaking the Swiss Alps, filled with the bodies of tens of thousands of people. The irony was not lost on him: to be a psychiatrist who was experiencing his own mental break with reality.
During this time, Jung devised a method for exploring the deep layers of his unconscious mind. The initial intent was to understand what was causing his mental break. In the process, he discovered a way to venture into the depths of the unconscious mind, interact with the personal complexes and collective archetypes, and have profound experiences that offer lessons for the waking mind to reflect upon. Jung named this type of meditation: active imagination. These transformative experiences can best be described as ‘visions’, and Jung transcribed them in his most enigmatic work: The Red Book.
In this class, we will chart a course through Jung's Red Book, examining key passages and analyzing their symbolism. We will use The Red Book as a source material to help us understand Jung's major psychological theories—individuation, anima / animus, the collective unconscious, the shadow, archetypes—all of which emerge from these visionary experiences.
Throughout the five weeks, students will also be introduced to the practice of active imagination (the method Jung developed for engaging the unconscious) and encouraged to work with it and transcribe the results. There will be time set aside at the end of each session for sharing some of these experiences. Note: sharing is optional, due to the personal nature of the material which often arises in active imagination.
By the end of the course, students will gain an understanding of Jung’s essential psychological theories and a comprehension of the esoteric symbolism of his creative masterpiece: The Red Book.
MJDorian is a multidisciplinary artist & lecturer most recently known for his work as host & creator of the podcast: Creative Codex. The show is an imaginative lecture series about the most consequential creative geniuses in history. What brings about a once-in-a-generation genius? And how do we improve our own creative processes?
In addition to writing and researching the creative geniuses featured in Creative Codex (ex: Frida Kahlo, William Blake, Emily Dickinson, Carl Jung, etc.) The guiding principle of the show is to create a sonic portrait of each figure, exploring their life and work through a humanistic lens.
Before Creative Codex, MJ earned a Masters in Film Scoring from NYU. After graduating he worked in the film industry for 10 years and earned various accolades including Best Original Score for the feature film Ontologica. (VISIONFEST 2011) He continues to write original music for every episode of Creative Codex.
(Artworks shown are by Dr. Carl Jung, The Red Book.)
