How do the stories and symbols of ancient India come alive in the way we move?
In this class, we will explore the fascinating interplay between the physical practice of yoga and the rich tapestry of Indian mythology and iconography. Drawing from both the written and artistic traditions of ancient India, we seek to uncover the deeper meanings behind yoga asanas—postures that are themselves inspired by deities, nature, and cosmic events.
In this 4-week class, we will spend our Sunday mornings together in study and movement. The bulk of each 90-minute session will be devoted to delving into Hindu art, literature, and scripture to illuminate the meaning behind traditional yoga asanas. Art historian and yoga instructor Brenda Edgar will provide detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to come into each pose as we move through the presentation. Following our study, we will engage in a yoga practice designed to be accessible to all experience levels, embodying the gods, goddesses, sages, heroes, and animals that we have explored—making constellations of our bodies that echo these divine forms.
Together, we will:
Delve into the mythological narratives and spiritual beliefs that shaped the creation of asanas.
Study the visual language and symbolic iconography embedded within Indian art and culture.
Practice yoga postures that are directly informed by these sacred stories, treating our bodies as living constellations reflecting divine manifestations.
Reflect on personal associations with particular icons and imagery encountered during movement.
Guiding Question: What figures, symbols, or deities do you feel yourself embodying as you move through different asanas?
Join us for an immersive journey blending movement, myth, art, and tradition—where each posture becomes an opportunity to experience and express the divine heritage of yoga.
