We are all familiar with the idea of using storytelling techniques when it comes to the spoken or written word. From marketing spiels to TED talks, the tools of the trade of the storyteller are common forms of entertainment and persuasion. Repetition of motifs, sharing moments of transformation or discovery, and descents to the underworld along the pattern of the Hero's Journey are tried and true ways of captivating and inspiring audiences. But what if the repetition of motif is a single spice or flavor note in a series of dishes? What if the moment of transformation is written into a song's bridge? What if the descent to the underworld and facing the goddess has to do with art gallery guests physically descending a set of steps before viewing the next piece?

In this six-week workshop, Alicia K. Anderson will apply the lecture concepts to in-person workshops and exercises. Bring your sense of play and curiosity! Bring your challenging storytelling problems! Bring a cocktail, a cat, or a conundrum.

Alicia K. Anderson's Ph.D. Dissertation, "Ask the Storyteller: Calling the Archetype to Center Stage" focused on engaging with and amplifying the Storyteller Archetype. Her work has expanded to include fairy tale retellings, storytelling rules, and story structure.
