19th century St. Sebastian Santo from Considered Trifles

$175.00

Mexican and carved from a single piece of wood, this 19th century statue of the martyr Saint Sebastian would have probably have had a place on a home altar or private place of worship.

St. Sebastian, an early Christian martyr was tied to a post and pierced by arrows; he miraculously survived, only to be martyred by beating. He has inspired countless artworks and is patron of those seeking protection from plagues. He has also become an icon in gay culture, symbolizing resilience and beauty, particularly through his sensual depictions in art.
