Based on Roman Catholic tradition, the Anima Sola or Lonely Soul is an image depicting a soul suffering in purgatory, popular in Latin America, as well as much of Andalusia, Naples and Palermo. Praying to the Anima Sola is a tradition in many ways unlike that of the more widespread Cult of Saints. In lieu of praying to a saint who then appeals to God, the Anima Sola represents souls in purgatory who require the assistance both of the living and the divine to ameliorate their sufferings in the afterlife.

Heather O’Shaughnessy is an American artist currently residing in Saint Louis Missouri. She works across disciplines as a sculptor, illustrator and ceramic artist and spent the last 5 years teaching ceramic sculpture on the Hawaiian islands. She works primarily in porcelain and wax and regularly participates in exhibitions throughout the United States. She developed her process with wax through trial and error, an endeavor which involves sculpting, mold making, casting, carving and painting, and shares this technique with others through wax-focused workshops. She periodically releases collections of miniature wax sculptures in limited edition.
