This class will serve as an introduction to using the techniques of improv to create compelling, silly and dramatic stories.

Improv (also known as Impro, Improvised Comedy and Improvisation) is an approach to creating spontaneous theatre without a script, and cultivates being 'in the moment' to collaborate with others.

For performance, improv may take audience suggestions to create spontaneous scenes, games, poems, songs and stories. Improvisors train like sports people, instead of rehearsing like actors, getting comfortable with the unexpected and using a mistake as the start of creating something new and interesting. Improv can be very serious but is more often comic, and can explore dark themes in a cathartic and light hearted way.

Through games and guided group exercises by the end of this class [course] participants will have:

• Explored some basic principles of improvisation

• Enjoyed interacting in a friendly, positive and supportive environment

• Twisted words and rhyme into surprising tales

• Added some new crayons to their writing and storytelling toolkit

Ali Little lives in a remote windswept valley with a small herd of alpacas and a labradoodle. Formally, she has an Advanced Diploma in Art & Creativity and a Post Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (Communications). She worked as a corporate weasel for 20 years, facilitating corporate stakeholder relations and the strategic conversation.

Then Ali discovered improvised theatre at a community college evening class. There was a lot of laughing. The other students were playful and supportive, variously shy or bold, everyone had fun. A ridiculous amount of fun. It was the start of a happy and strange creative journey.

Since then, Ali has performed in and produced shows, taught workshops, taken workshops with some of the best improvisors in the world, built a Gorilla, made and performed with masks and puppets, and animated short movies. Her last pre-covid creation was P'oed, an improvised darkly gothic romp inspired by Edgar Allan P, presented as part of the 2020 New Zealand Fringe Festival.

She is currently a Creative Director for the Wellington Improvisation Troupe (WIT).
