It seems that the Unicorn is somehow linked to the idea of the monstrous feminine, but why should this be? Peter S. Beagle’s famous novel The Last Unicorn pitted the titular unicorn against two different types of the monstrous feminine: the harpy, and the sorceress. Long before Beagle, the unicorn was depicted alongside a wild woman covered in hair from head to toe. Why is she allowed to touch and ride the unicorn so freely? Building on the possible meanings and interpretations of the unicorn, this talk will look at deepening our understanding of the unicorn and the monstrous feminine by looking at where they co-occur. We will examine how Harpy and the Unicorn are “Equals and Opposites;” Hubris and Mommy Fortuna in The Last Unicorn; The Wild woman and the unicorn in art; The Virgin/Whore Paradox; and the non-binary nature of the Unicorn.
